Game selection is important for players from beginner to expert when it comes to playing poker. At all hours of the day and night a game can be found online. This is why there is no excuse for beginners not to find the best game before sitting down at the table.
The best game would generally be one in which the players are a loose and passive. Good players can make a lot of money from these loose, inexperienced players. At the lower stakes there are a ton of these games to be found. If you can't find one on your site of choice, it is best to check out the other sites to see if a game like this is available at your level.
The way to find these loose games is by looking in the lobby at the numerous stats that most sites will display for each table. Many sites will tell you how many players see the flop on average, which can give you a reasonable idea of how loose the players are at a table.
Beginning player should generally stick to the traditional 9 or 10-handed ring games. In a full game, players are faced with less marginal decisions and situations. The play in a full game is less read-dependent than in a shorthanded game, and most of your decisions when starting out will be based on the strength of your hand.
As you start to get a feel for the basics and master the fundamentals you will start playing your opponents more, as opposed to just your cards. With this skill you can try out some of the 6-max tables, but only after you have a significant amount of experience playing in full ring games.

This is what game selection boils down to. As a beginner you are going to be playing extremely tight, mostly sticking to the Top 10 Hands. By doing this alone you will be giving yourself an advantage over most of the low limit players online. It is important that you invest the extra time needed to seek out games you can beat.
The best part about online poker is the fact that if you find yourself in a game where you think the players are better than you; it is very easy to find another game within seconds. Many of the major online poker sites have up to 40,000 players during peak hours. This gives you an opportunity to open up a few tables and watch them to see which one would be best to sit down and play at. This is a luxury many live players can't even enjoy. At many casinos there are only a few games spread for each limit, whereas online you can always find a game better than the last one.
Many beginning players make the mistake of just sitting down at the first table they open up. This is a giant mistake because they have no idea of the quality of their opposition. With so many games to choose from online, why would you not want to be in one you know you can profit from? Even if you can't find a good game at one site, it is beneficial to check the other sites, simply because you can.
Game selection can make a big difference in a player's bottom line. By selecting games you know you can beat, and staying out of the tougher ones, you give yourself a better chance to become a winning player right from the start.
